Chapbook:Research, Analyzing texts from works with similar themes and genres.

In order to develop my Chapbook I needed to do some research on two books that I believe have similar themes as to what I am trying to make and from these books, I hope I could learn the thematic sense and language needed for a coming of age story

Jacqueline Wilson; The Primrose Railway Children

(Amazon, 2021)

The language used in the book is generally straightforward and accessible, with a focus on dialogue between the characters. This could be useful in a coming of age story as it can help to create a sense of immediacy and intimacy between the reader and the characters. Additionally, the use of dialogue can be a great way to reveal the personalities and motivations of the characters, which is often important in a coming of age story as the protagonist is usually learning more about themselves and others as they grow and change.

The book explores themes related to family and belonging. The book features a group of children who become friends despite their different backgrounds and who come to rely on each other as a kind of surrogate family. This theme is important for a coming of age story, as the protagonist might be struggling to find their place in the world or feeling disconnected from their own family.

Roald Dahl: Matilda

(Amazon, 2022)

The language used in this book is playful and whimsical, with a focus on creating vivid imagery and descriptions. This could be useful in a coming of age story as it can help to create a sense of wonder and discovery for the protagonist as they navigate new experiences and emotions. Additionally, the playful language can help to make the story more engaging and enjoyable to read, which is especially important if I want to appeal to a younger demographic, as I previously mentioned in an earlier post.

This book explores themes related to power and individuality. The book features a protagonist who has a unique ability (telekinesis) and who uses it to overcome the obstacles she faces. This theme is important for a coming of age story because the protagonist is struggling to find their own voice or assert themselves in their own life.

The language and themes used in these books could be useful in different ways when writing my own coming of age story.
