Podcast: Target Market research

When it comes to creating a successful podcast, understanding who the audience is, is key.

Let's first look at what and audience is what makes an audience;

According to MacQuail ( 1997) audience is "aggregate of actual or potential consumers of media services and products, with a known social-economic profile"

By understanding this definition we have to look at know our actual or potential viewership, and understand their social economic profile to gear the content towards that demographic.

(Riverside.fm team, 2023)

While age and gender can be possible factors to consider based on factoring for a demographic,  the subject matter of my podcast isn't effected by those factors as hobbies are a universal concept irrespective of age of gender but that being said,

"In 2019, around half of monthly podcast listeners had a full-time job(51%), 17% of whom have a household income between $100K-$150K. 28% have a university degree." (Riverside.fm team, 2023)
This suggests that content of podcast has to be geared to people that are educated and or are in education as 51% have jobs and 28% have university degrees.  Choosing not to do so may cause alienation.

Another factor to consider that a podcast about "hobbies of foreigners and how they are affected in 1st world countries," may have a target can vary depending on the specific focus of this podcast, let's look at some different types of audiences that may be interested:

-Individuals interested in cultural exchange and learning about different hobbies from around the world. This audience may consist of people who enjoy traveling, learning about different cultures, and trying new activities.

-Expats living in first-world countries who are looking for ways to connect with their home culture. This audience may consist of people who have moved to a new country and are feeling homesick or disconnected from their culture. They may be interested in learning about hobbies from their home country and how they can continue practicing them in their new location.

-People interested in self-improvement and personal development. This audience may consist of people who are looking to expand their horizons and try new things. They may be interested in learning about new hobbies and how they can incorporate them into their lives.

-Individuals interested in the social and economic implications of globalization. This audience may consist of people who are interested in how globalization affects different aspects of society, including hobbies and leisure activities.

By knowing my audience, it's important to keep that target market in mind because the content has to be tailored their interests and needs. By understanding audiences, I can create a podcast that is engaging, informative, and relevant to their lives. This may involve exploring different hobbies from around the world, examining the social and cultural context in which they are practiced, and providing practical tips for how listeners can incorporate these hobbies into their own lives. By engaging with my target market and creating content that resonates with them, I can build a sense of relatability in my audience and make my podcast a success.
